Working with a contractor does not have to be a terrible experience; however, we have heard of some people who lose money working with other contractors in our area. We have all heard of people who pay the contractor, and they never come back to finish the work.
We wanted to offer some tips to prevent being ripped off by a contractor.
1. In the construction industry, you get what you pay for. Be leary of the cheapest contractor. It is better to find a reputable contractor that you can trust, than trust your investment (your home) to someone who may not know what they are doing.
2. Avoid contractors who want a significant amount of money down up front. There are other ways to do business and achieve the same goal.
3. Never pay the contractor an early final payment before the work is completed to your satisfaction.
4. Make sure the company is licensed and Insured.
5. Ask to call references. Get the names and call the people and see how the company did on previous projects. Look the company up on the Better Business Bureau website and see if there are any complaints.
6. Use a title company as a middleman. There are companies called title companies who will act as a middleman between you and the contractor. They may charge a small fee to do this; however, they will work for you to keep the money safe until the project is complete.
Using a title company is very simple. The title company secures the money by the homeowner in conjunction with the homeowner's bank. The contractor has to do the work to get paid. If the work is not completed, the contractor does not get paid. Installment payments are a good way to go and make periodic payments to the contractor, especially if the project takes more than a week or two. Plain and simple, this is protection for the homeowner to prevent getting duped. A reputable company should not be adverse to using a title company. It also assures the contractor the funds are secure for when the job is over. It is a win-win for both sides.

A customer wanted a commercial bar built to serve food and to have a place he could honor his late brother. He called the place Verns and was excited to share his ideas with us during the building stage. We were able to bring his ideas to life as you can see in the following photos. While the file quality of the pictures is low, the quality and craftsmanship that went into the construction is high.
